Crime Doesn't Pay...

Between 2 and 3am on May 24th, 2002, I went outside onto my veranda (really just the front steps) to have one last cigarette before going to bed. I saw someone trying to break into a car down the street, so I went inside and grabbed my Sony DV cam to see if I could get him on film.

When I got back, he was breaking into a car across the street and I began filming using the camera's 'Night Shot' feature. I was standing under a bright light and was clearly visible while doing this, but he kept going about his 'business'.

After about a minute I called the police. While I was waiting, this guy started walking down the street. I followed about 100 yards behind and watched as he tried car after car, looking for stuff to steal I guess. He finally found one he liked, and broke its window. The car alarm went off, forcing him to move on.

I heard a car speeding down the street. It was the police. They were making a left turn and about to go away from where this guy was, so I hopped into the street (hopping because I was still in slippers) and I pointed the direction of the guy.

45 seconds later, he was 'resting peacefully' on the hood of their cruiser. The officers said he was probably breaking in to cars looking for change. They also showed me his crack pipes. I'm sure he was a very charming man.

Long story short, I gave a copy of the video to the police and later the prosecutor's office. I'm guessing they used it against this guy. Good for him.
